Pre-Retirement Checklist
- Contact your benefits representative to discuss your employer's retirement plan options.
- If no plan is currently available, review IRA choices at www.charlesschwab.com and www.fidelity.com.
- Review budget and, if possible, maximize your contributions.
- Develop annual savings goals.
- Review investments and asset allocation at least semi-annually.
- Assign beneficiaries to your accounts.
Approaching Retirement Checklist
- Am I contributing the maximum amount to my retirement plans?
- Are my accounts at the appropriate risk level for the stage of life I am in?
- Are my investments diversified?
- Have I developed an estimated retirement budget?
- What will be my primary sources of income (pension, social security, investments, etc.)?
- Have I received a social security or pension benefit estimate?
- Will the choices in my company-sponsored plan provide me with the investments I need at retirement, and if not what are my options?
- Have I assigned beneficiaries on my accounts?
- Do I have a will or estate plan?
- Will I stay a resident of my current state?
- How will my money be taxed at retirement?
Retired Checklist
Congratulations on your retirement! We know that you worked hard for your retirement, and that every dollar you saved is important to maintain your current lifestyle. Just because you're retired doesn't mean that it's okay to let your money retire or time to stop planning. Following a retirement checklist can help you stay on course and continue to fulfill all of your retirement dreams!
- Review the following items in your portfolio:
- Asset Allocation
- Diversification
- Risk
- Investment Options
- Calculate your retirement budget.
- Assign beneficiaries on retirement accounts, life insurance policies, bank accounts, and any other assets that allow beneficiary designation.
- Update wills and trusts, if applicable.
- Understand your social security benefits (800-772-1213).
- Understand your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) at age 70-1/2.
- Develop an investment strategy that will meet your current and future income needs, and provide for your family if a catastrophe occurs.
